FAN Courier regional hub in Sibiu — the third regional hub developed by PPAE for the expansion of the FAN Courier network outside Bucharest. Unlike the previous ones, the Sura Mica project required solving a site with serious technical challenges, which made foundation and earthworks a major component of the investment.

Challenges

Three site conditions defined the project: a level difference of approximately 14 m between the eastern and western sides of the land, proximity to a stream with flood risk on the north-western side, and difficult access through a dangerous intersection on DJ 148, near the A1 motorway ramps. Added to this was the requirement to integrate the hub into the architectural language already established at Brasov and Cluj, preserving the visual coherence of the FAN Courier network.

Solutions

  • Major vertical earthworks for the sloping site. The 14 m difference between the extreme levels of the land required extensive excavation, retaining walls and slope consolidation. The operational platforms were organized on distinct levels, connected by ramps sized for truck circulation.
  • Raised platform level for flood protection. The entire built complex sits above the flood-risk level of the neighbouring stream, with the protection zone observed on the north-western side.
  • Reconfiguration of the access intersection on DJ 148. The change in intersection geometry — necessary for the safe movement of the FAN Courier fleet and public traffic — was integrated into the investment project, as an obligation assumed by the beneficiary for the opening of the hub.
  • Brand language continuity. The office volume takes on the secondary envelope of perforated sheet metal on a steel structure, the visual signature already established at Brasov and Cluj.

Result

For FAN Courier, a regional hub ready to serve operations in the central area of the country, authorized in 2025 and in the stage preceding execution. For PPAE, a project that confirms the team's ability to solve difficult sites through close coordination between architecture, structure, infrastructure and hydrotechnics.
