Grupo Antolin factory in Sibiu — a production unit for plastic injection and assembly of automotive interior components, developed for the Romanian subsidiary of the Spanish group Grupo Antolin, a global supplier for the largest carmakers, present in over 25 countries. With a built area of approximately 13,500 sqm, the project was developed in accordance with two sets of international standards applied simultaneously: FM Global for fire safety and property protection, BREEAM for sustainability.

Challenges

For its factories worldwide, Grupo Antolin applies a specification that requires compliance with two standards rarely encountered simultaneously in industrial projects in Romania. FM Global sets strict requirements for protecting buildings and equipment against major losses — applied to the sprinkler system, compartmentation, structure and envelope. BREEAM assesses the building's sustainability throughout its entire life cycle — from material selection to energy performance, indoor air quality and stormwater management. Added to the two regulatory sets was the technological typology — plastic injection with a mould store, maintenance, drying system — which involves load-bearing capacities, systems and flows specific to the automotive industry.

Solutions

  • Design in accordance with the FM Global standard. The sprinkler system, the fire-water supply (tank and pumping station with an intangible reserve), the compartmentation of risk zones, the structure and the envelope were calibrated to meet FM Global requirements — requirements stricter than the regulated minimum in Romania, to limit major losses in the event of fire.
  • Design in accordance with the BREEAM standard. Material selection, energy-efficiency solutions, ventilation with controlled indoor air quality, stormwater management and exterior landscaping — all calibrated for the BREEAM assessment. PPAE applied the standard's requirements in the architectural solutions; formal certification is coordinated separately by the beneficiary.
  • Technological hall for injection and assembly. The production spaces — the two-phase injection zone, the mould store, the mould-maintenance workshop, the drying system, the machine-tool workshop, the erosion machine, laser, ultrasound — were coordinated with the requirements for load-bearing capacity, high-power electrical installations, ventilation and extraction, alongside the administrative area on the upper floor with offices, conference rooms and open space for approximately 50 users.

Result

For Grupo Antolin, a factory compliant with the global standards applied by the group across all its factories, integrated into the international production map. For PPAE, a project that confirms the team's ability to deliver industrial buildings simultaneously compliant with two demanding sets of international standards — a rare competence in the Romanian industrial-design market.
