The modernisation of the Pajo Agriculture compound feed factory (CFF) in Băbeni, Vâlcea County — the third milestone in PPAE’s collaboration with the Carmistin group, after the Avicarvil slaughterhouses in Frâncești and Târgu Jiu. Here the intervention does not target a single building, but the entire production flow: from the raw-material silos, at the entrance, to the finished-product ones, at the exit. PPAE was General Designer.

Challenges

A feed factory is a continuous flow: grain reception, raw-material storage, milling, mixing and granulation, then the storage and delivery of the finished product. The challenge was to intervene across all these stages, on an operating unit, without stopping its production. To this was added a major technical difficulty of the site: ground that is difficult to found on, with a very high water table — a serious problem especially for the heavily loaded finished-product silos, where both the risk of differential settlement and that of flooding the underground grain-transport infrastructure had to be eliminated.

Solutions

PPAE treated the factory “from one end of the flow to the other”. At the entrance — ten new raw-material (grain) silos, 25 m tall, with a reception canopy, a pre-cleaner and the system of elevators and conveyors that carry the grain into the silos, plus a buffer silo for wet grain. At the core — new machinery in the mill and a modernised thermal plant. At the exit — a battery of fourteen finished-product silos, with bulk delivery directly into the means of transport. Plus the feed sales shop. The foundation solutions were sized specifically for the difficult ground and the groundwater, to protect the silos from differential settlement and the buried infrastructure from flooding.

Result

For Pajo Agriculture, a factory modernised along the whole chain, with greatly extended storage capacity (in the order of 70,000 t) and increased production — today one of the largest compound feed units in the country. For PPAE, confirmation of its role as a growth partner of the Carmistin group — a collaboration that also includes the slaughterhouses in Frâncești and Târgu Jiu and the Intermeat animal waste treatment plant in Galicea.
