Kellogg's | Food factory extension
Polonia, Kutno | G+2F partially | 25.000sqm | Architecture Design | 2012-2013 | in use

The only project in the PPAE portfolio carried out outside Romania — an extension of the Kellogg's factory at Kutno, in Poland, for the production of Pringles chips. With a built area of approximately 25,000 sqm, the complex brings together a main hall with four functional zones and a substantial group of exterior technological buildings, delivered for an American beneficiary through collaboration with a Romanian general designer and a Swedish general contractor.

Challenges

The project involved two types of challenges that operated simultaneously. Technically, the building was conceived to wrap a single production line of approximately 160 linear metres, developed over several technological levels — the architecture does not shape the technology but follows it strictly, from the raw-material silos to the finished-product packaging zone. Organizationally, PPAE delivered the architecture part as a subcontractor for Blue Projects, in a coordination chain that included the American beneficiary, the Swedish general contractor (Skanska) and the Polish approval authorities — documentation compliant with local regulations, in the language and format required by each interlocutor, for a food typology operating 24/7 for 330 days a year.

Solutions

The main hall was sized strictly — 252 m long, 41.7 m span — as much as was needed to wrap the technological line along its entire route. The three distinct height levels (13, 16 and 22 m) follow the geometry of the equipment: the low zones for packaging and storage, the high ones for the production sectors and for handling raw materials in the silo.

Around the main hall, the auxiliary technological buildings were integrated — the nitrogen installation, the tank farm, the pumping station, the water filters, the grease separator, the utilities building — each with its own constructive requirements and precise functional connections to the production flow.

The exterior envelope takes on the Kellogg's colour code: white and grey sandwich panels as a sober background, with horizontal red accents that mark the volumes and introduce the brand's visual signature into the industrial landscape of the Kutno area.

Result

For Kellogg's and Blue Projects, an extension completed in 2013 that enabled the launch of Pringles chips production at Kutno. For PPAE, a documented international reference — a project carried out entirely in a foreign legislative and organizational context, in collaboration with a multinational consortium, for a global brand. It remains, to date, PPAE's only collaboration with Blue Projects and the only project in our portfolio delivered outside Romania.
